About This Training

What if Self is bigger than we've been taught?

What if the Internal Family System’s ( IFS’s) concept of Self is ancestral, relational, embodied, and political? In short, it is all of these things.

Locating Self is an experiential and didactic continuing education training that expands the Internal Family Systems (IFS) concept of Self through ancestral memory, intersectional identity, and liberatory practice — while honoring and building on the foundational IFS framework you already know.

This training made its debut at the IFS Institute Annual Conference 2025 to a full room of participants. It is now available as a standalone continuing education training for licensed mental health professionals who already have foundational IFS exposure and want to deepen that work through a liberatory lens.

Participants will explore how race, queerness, gender, spirituality, systemic oppression, and cultural inheritance shape access to Self-energy — in both clinicians and the clients they serve.

This Training Integrates:

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Theory

  • Intersectionality & Social Location Frameworks

  • Ancestral & Embodied Healing Perspectives

  • Liberatory & Anti-Oppressive Clinical Application

In This Training, You Will:

✓ Explore the IFS concept of Self and consider how identity, culture, ancestry, and social location shape access to Self-energy.

✓ Examine how systemic oppression, historical trauma, and collective burdens influence protective parts and Self-leadership.

✓ Reflect on the ways personal and collective histories shape healing, belonging, and our relationship to Self.

✓ Deepen your understanding of how an intersectional and liberatory lens can expand and enrich IFS-informed practice.

✓ Experience practices that support locating embodied Self-energy in yourself and the people you serve.

✓ Identify pathways toward greater self-understanding, compassion, connection, and wholeness.

  • Grounded didactic content

  • Clinical application

Participation in experiential activities is encouraged but not required. This training is educational in nature and does not constitute therapy or clinical supervision.
